Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Rating – ****

Defying all my expectations, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatball rains down pure joy upon the cinematic landscape. Ignore the awful title (blame the book! ) and the poster which conjures up sub-Dreamworks level tedium (this is a Sony production) and an onslaught of horrible pop culture gags… the film couldn’t be more different! Mixing elements of A-grade Simpsons episodes, Genndy Tarkovsky cartoons, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, and Spielberg-worthy action spectacle with a heart, this will rank alongside the very best films of 2009!

The premise disregards all logic. But in doing so, it taps in to that essential sense of fun usually only dreamed up in the exercise books of primary school children. Namely, a young scientist invents a machine to turn water into food. It gets accidentally launched into the stratosphere and has an amazing effect on local precipitation patterns. The ensuing spectacle builds into a climax which rivals Back to the Future, Honey I shrunk the Kids, and maybe even Star Wars! Yes, it has that magical 80s vibe and I felt so happy I had butterflies. I also recommend the 3D version, which subtly enhances the experience without ever resorting to gimmicks. Until you’ve seen a mansion made of jelly, a spaghetti tornado, or a flock of carnivorous plucked chickens, your life won’t be complete. Bruce Campbell and Mr T are in it too!
