L’instinct de mort (Mesrine: Killer Instinct)

Rating – ****

“Nobody kills me until I say so!” It’s fair to say Jacques Mesrine led a colourful life, and that colour was mainly blood red. He was a man who made serious decisions in the blink of an eye and than set them into motion. The relentless pacing and structure of the film reflects this. I knew nothing about Mesrine prior to this film, so I’m eager to see “part deux” of the whole sorry affair. Vincent Cassel is electric as the eponymous legendary gangster, and the cinematography is inventive. In short, this is a rewarding watch, a fascinating insight into the dangerous mind of a real life legend.
