The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Rating – *****

The holocaust is clearly a tricky subject to approach. But seen through the eyes of an innocent little boy the atrocities are somehow magnified by his misinterpretation of the events. I felt quite sick and uneasy as the circumstances become clear. In a way this is a companion piece to Pan’s Labyrinth. The similarities are quite striking the more you think about it. However, there’s no comforting fantasy world to escape to this time. Prepare yourself for something utterly devastating. I was worried that it would feel manipulative, but it was almost perfectly handled. This is a film which needs to be seen by everyone including children mature enough to reflect on the subject matter afterwards. It’s hard to accurately express the sensation of viewing this film. I thought it was absolutely stunning, and maybe the best film of the year.
