If only this was supposed to be a comedy. Taken ticks off pretty much every action movie cliché, yet seems to be blissfully unaware of it. There is an overly earnest and naive flavour to Liam Neeson’s character. I couldn’t shake this feeling as I watched him brutally pulverise legions of disposable hit men. This is wise old Qui-Gon and Aslan, not to mention Oskar Schindler. To be fair, Neeson still crafts a charismatic screen presence. However the script is hilariously bad, I really thought it was a wind-up to start with. I expected Trey Parker to pop up and reveal this as a satire of action movies like Team America. The very second Liam’s daughter and her slutty pal land in Paris they are kidnapped by evil Albanians. He already warned them about how evil the rest of the world is, I guess they should have listened. So now Liam (that’s what they should have called this movie, as in Leon – The Professional) jumps on a plane to Paris. He kills a bunch of people, blows up some shit and eventually finds her on a boat with a Jabba The Hut look-a-like  (possibly a subtle Star Wars connection?) This is a pretty bad movie. There’s some entertainment value due to the violence and unintentional hilarity, but it takes itself too seriously to be considered a true guilty pleasure. I have no idea why Holly Valance turns up either!
