Kung Fu Panda

Rating – ****

Easily the best non Shrek film Dreamworks Animation has ever produced! Kung Fu Panda avoids the studio’s usual pitfalls. It doesn’t pander (see what I did there) to the masses with annoying and quickly dated pop culture “jokes”. These have thankfully been left out in favour of a strong character-driven script and a simple yet entertaining and compelling story. The action scenes are simply some of the most breathtaking stuff I’ve ever viewed! It trumps the Matrix, Spiderman, and Star Wars in terms of pure adrenaline and virtuoso camerawork. The relationship between Po and his duck (don’t ask) father is strangely touching yet never saccharine. Dustin Hoffman is a wonderful kung-fu master and the rest of the cast are perfect too. In garbage like Shark Tale the celebrity voices are horribly distracting. But here I had to wait for the credits to see that I’d been listening to Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Angelina Jolie, and Seth Rogen. This is what going to the cinema is all about, the screen was illuminated with magic for 90 minutes. When the film ended, almost all of the usually sarcastic and cynical Framestore employees gladly sat through the credits. Why? Respect, for the fine work we had just witnessed…………. or possibly some sort of temporary paralysis?
