Robert Zemeckis is one of the great modern film makers. The average Joe may not recognise his name, but his work speaks for itself. Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Castaway, Contact. He fuses cutting edge technology with great stories that resonate on a much deeper level than simple popcorn thrills. Beowulf doesn’t concern itself with being family friendly. This is a mature, often cold and bleak world. The graphic violence and horror is refreshing, taking you out of your comfort zone and putting you on the edge of your seat. My criticisms of the 3D motion capture are fairly trivial. On a couple of occasions we fall into the tacky Jaws 3D style gimmickry of objects ‘poking you in the eye’. I have to admit being unfamiliar with the ancient poem of Beowulf but I could feel the spirit of the story shining through and it’s a damn good one. This is what makes the incredible dragon duel so gripping. It’s not just the fantastic camerawork and staging, but you feel for the characters and everything which is at stake. The cast, especially Hopkins, Gleeson and Winstone are great… + Angelina Jolie is looking hot!  I’m not sure that 3D will ever become the true industry standard for blockbuster films. People will tire of it just like excessive CGI. But when great directors like Zemeckis and Cameron are calling the shots, hopefully the results will continue to be this rewarding.
