30 Days of Night

Rating – ***

Atmospheric, tense, and often quite disturbing. It’s refreshing to see a film like this place emphasis on the quiet moments, making silence far scarier than endless screams and explosions. The vampire designs are cool, almost shark like with their black eyes and rows of razor sharp teeth. David Slade has made excellent use of the crisp snowy white location, spraying dark red blood all over it whenever possible. There are strong echoes of John Carpenters ‘The Thing’ and for the most part this is a very solid horror movie. It left me feeling slightly empty but that’s because it gradually winds down rather than ending with a bang. But 30 Days of Night is still cool, memorable, and refreshing.
